The Miniature Painting Open (MPO) is an international miniature painting competition celebrating creativity, technical skill, and craftsmanship across multiple categories and experience levels.

The event is open to painters of all experience levels unless otherwise stated in the event rules.

No. The Miniature Painting Open is an independent event.

Online & In-Person Events

  • Online events are entered and judged using uploaded images.
  • In-person events are judged from physical miniatures at the event location.

All entries are submitted through the Entry Compendium platform.

Entry Fees

  • Online events: Free
  • In-person events: Entry is only available to attendees of the event

There is no option to ship miniatures — you must be present at the event to enter.

Entering the Competition

  • Online events: Yes, images are required for judging.
  • In-person events: Image uploads are optional but encouraged.

Any images uploaded for in-person entries will appear in the public event gallery.

Editing Your Entry

In-person events:

Yes. Images can be uploaded or updated after submission, as judging is done using the physical miniature. This allows you to add photos for the public gallery even after the event.

Online events:

Image uploads are locked once submitted and cannot be changed.

However, you may still edit:

  • Entry title
  • Sculptor information

Categories & Levels

The Miniature Painting Open uses the following levels:

  • Beginner
  • Standard
  • Master

These are based on experience, not the quality of a single piece.

Categories vary by event and may include single miniatures, units, busts, vehicles, and dioramas.

Judging & Feedback

Entries are judged by experienced judges using criteria appropriate to the event.

  • In-person events: Yes, feedback is provided on the day.
  • Online events: No, unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Awards & Results

  • In-person events: Awards are presented on the day.
  • Online events: Award availability varies by event.

An entry may receive only one position award, but may also receive separate additional awards where applicable.

Rules & Eligibility

Yes, as long as it has not previously placed in a competition.

No. Recast models are not permitted.

Yes, but one person must complete all painting.

Collaboration is allowed only in the case of a separate sculptor.

In-Person Event Rules

No. Shipping is not permitted. You must attend the event in person to enter.

Entries must be collected at the event. No return shipping is provided.
